Description

Somewhat larger than other yellowthroats, bill heavier and with arched culmen, tail longer and somewhat more graduated. Male grayish olive above with gray crown and black lores and acular region (but no mask); below bright yellow, fading to buffy whitish on lower belly. Female similar but has crown tinged olive and lacks black on face (lores dusky, ocular area olive). Immatures lack gray on crown.

Habits and Behavior

Often in quite dry areas. Frequently pumps and swivels its long tail. Its song is a clear, fast, rather high warbled phrase, usually delivered from a somewhat elevated perch.
