I am a Canadaian university student who has been living in La Granadilla for a month and a half. The community is warm and welcoming. Everyone is willing to teach visiters patiently, even ones who speak very little Spanish, as I do, about the dynamics of the community and about their extensive and beautiful variety of plants. I was particularily awed by the huge amount of different fruit trees. Walking through the community, which is shadowed by Mombacho, is beautiful, especially in the forested areas. Sometimes, you can find congo monkeys. It is very easy to travel by mototaxi to the busstop, and from there you can make your way to any city, town or place in Nicaragua. I would highly reccomend a visit to La Granadilla if you are in Nicaragua, expecially if you are planning on visiting Granada which is only about 30 minutes away.

Description

La Granadilla is a rural community where a cooperation of farmers offers tourists the possibility to learn more about their way of living in a rural setting

At this site people can walk down trails that lead to the plantations and houses of the local families, and there are also bicycles and horses available for rent. Tours in oxcarts are possible as well and the community also offers lodging options.

Visitors are welcomed in the beautiful communal house of La Granadilla (Granadilla is also a tropical fruit). This well-maintained building has three shared bedrooms, a central area with dining table and a principal room with a small communal library. The place is also available for events and training sessions. The reception is realized by the same people from the community who function as guides.

The prices of the services at La Granadilla are very accessible. A one-night stay at the communal house costs US$5 (bathroom outside) or US$8 (bathroom inside) per person. Laundry service is also available. Hiring a guide for walks cost US$3 per person in a group of up to five people (US$10 in a bike tour). The oxcart rides cost US$20 per group and renting a bike costs US$10 per day.

Nicaragua Libre is manager by a cooperation of farmers that are members of the Union of Cooperative Agriculturalists ‘UCA Tierra y Agua’. This organization also offers other activities in this area like the trails of Aguas Agrias and visits to the La Granadilla community.

Getting There

The La Granadilla community can be reached from Monte Verde, located at kilometer 60.5 of the highway between Granada and Nandaime. Here, take the unpaved road to the left (coming from Granada) and continue the road for 1.5 kilometers until a road from the left meets the principal road. After another kilometer down this other road visitors will find the communal house of La Granadilla. For more directions contact the UCA Tierra y Agua organization (see the contact box).
