Description

The La Corona community in the municipality of Matagalpa is located at an elevation of 700 meters and within its collaborative tourism program it offers several interesting opportunities to learn more about this area and its people. Visitors can get to know and experience the activities of producers of organic coffee or enjoy a fresh bathing at the Yasika and Posa Bruja waterfalls. Many more rural activities and ecological visits are offered in this zone as well.

Guests are received in the hamlet by the local farmer cooperative, which is part of the Agricultural Union of Cooperatives, UCA San Ramón. Here, inhabitants of the village explain the history of the cooperative and they give information about the coffee which is produced without usage of chemicals (US$3 per person). This way, visitors can learn about and participate in the production activities at the farms. These activities range from making fertilizer and harvesting coffee to regulating shade and cultivating organic coffee.

Several other activities are offered at this community, including cultural arrangements presented by the locals and cavalcades. They also teach visitors how to cook traditional Nicaraguan food (prices among US$45 and US$100 per group) and there is also a course on natural medicine (prices among US$45 and US$100 per group).

Outside the community the cooperative offers hikes to the mountains nearby and the waterfalls of Posa Bruja and Salto Yasica, where local legends talk about the indigenous princess who had the same name, and which is part of the cultural patrimony of the region. This activity is realized by guides; each can attend a group of up to 7 people (prices among US$15 and US$20 per group).

Two hostels were built within this community and in some households of the inhabitants there are also rooms available for visitors (prices among US$10 and US$15 per person/day), who can experience the rustic and quiet life of the farmers and their delicious food (prices among US$3 and US$5 per person).
