Description
The impressive Peñas Blancas Massif is part of the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve. It forms a natural border between the departments of Matagalpa and Jinotega, located about 70 kilometers from Matagalpa, in the direction of Cuá. It includes one of the highest mountains of the country (1,745 meters above sea level). The area is best known for its stunning – yet rather unexplored – natural surroundings.
Steep cliffs, rich ecosystems (including rain forests and cloud forests), waterfalls, and beautiful animals can all be found here. The area is inhabited by rural, small-scale farmers, living in small settlements throughout the region. There are some lodging options within the reserve, and adventurers can even camp at the top of a hill.
The most important activities to undertake at the Peñas Blancas massif include hiking through the impressive forest, visiting a local farmer producing coffee, cacao, and other products, and tranquilly enjoying the natural setting and the great, locally produced food.
Getting There
The Peñas Blancas massif can be reached by taking a bus from the terminal in Guanuca (heading to El Cua-Bocay). By bus this trip takes about 2.5 – 3 hours. It is also possible to get here in own transportation or by contracting a tour operator. When driving independently, take the road towards El Tuma and La Dalia. At La Dalia, head towards El Cua, and take a right at the sign that says ‘Centro del Entrendimiento de la Naturaleza’ (heading towards the community of Peñas Blancas). Here, ask for the house of Don Chico, where more information about hikes and guides can be found. Please note that the last part of the road can be in bad shape, and a 4WD car is necessary. With private transportation, this trip can be done in 2 hours.
