Sixth International Poetry Festival of Granada

The colonial city of Granada has become, since Sunday, February 14, the headquarters of the of the sixth International Poetry Festival, an renowned event that gathers poets from all over the world and aims to promote the cultural exchange of poets from different generations and nationalities. This year, the festival will have the participation of poets from 64 countries, who will be part of poetry recitals and conferences, and will be able to visit - along with the general public - books, tourism and handicrafts fairs, a carnival, among other activities.

According to the information given by the International Poetry Festival Foundation of Granada, organizer of the event, the festival will be dedicated to the Nicaraguan poet Azarías H. Pallais and its slogan is "La poesía es el ángel de la imaginación." Even though the majority of the activities mentioned above will take place in Granada, there will also be recitals in different cities like Nandaime, Diriía, Diriomo, Niquinohomo, Masaya, Catarina, San Juan de Oriente, Masatepe, San Marcos, Diriamba, and others.

All the poets arrived to Nicaragua on Sunday, February 14. At 10:00 am, there will be a poetry workshop called "La experiencia de la poesía" (The experience of poetry), which will be in charge of the Cuban poet Luis Lorente and the Costa Rican, José María Zonta, at Casa de los Tres Mundos. On that same day, at 8:00 pm, the Nicaraguan singer Katia Cardenal will give a concert with songs from her new recording material "Misa campesina nicaragüense".

On the following day, the inaugurations of the Books Fair (Plaza de los Leones), the Expotur "Ruta del Agua/Río San Juan" Tourism Fair (Calle La Calzada) and the Handicrafts Fair (Central Park) will be held. Also, at 6:30 pm, there will be a series of poetry readings that will continue until Friday, February 19, in different spots.

It is also important to mention even though the program of activities start on Sunday 14, the official inauguration of this international festival will be held on Tuesday, February 16, at Plaza de la Independencia. The event will include a speech by the Vice-President of the Republic, Jaime Morales Carazo, and other representatives of governmental institutions.
