Description
Bastilla Ecolodge features some very interesting aspects that are not seen with many other hotels. Firsts of all, the lodge is located within the Datanli-El Diablo, a natural reserve measuring over 5,000 hectares and in the vicinity of the Apanás Lake.
Located 27 kilometers from Jinotega and at a height of 1,200 meters above the sea level, the climate is fresh and the nature abundant. But perhaps most interestingly, the establishment is manages by students of a local educational project (supervised by professionals). Hence, by visiting this hotel tourists provide education in this rural area.
The Bastilla Ecolodge hotel also offers many other attractive elements. There is a variety of activities that can be undertaken. Visitors can the hike trails of the reserve, observe the many bird species, or visit the La Bastilla Coffee Farm. Throughout the year, visitors can participate in a coffee tasting, and from December to March it is even possible to participate in the coffee harvest.
In addition to comfortable rooms offered with continental breakfast included, there is also an option to camp on a wooden deck. Tents, foldable beds, bedding, towels and even a private bath with solar-powered hot water are all provided.

My husband and I absolutely loved La Bastilla Ecolodge. The hotel is nestled in the mountains and the views from the cosy wooden cabins are stunning. We had a really spatious double cabin with huge bed, our own balcony with rocking chairs, and spotlessly clean white bathroom. We loved the solar hot water (which comes out really hot!) and solar electricity and environmentally friendly vibe of the place. It was totally peaceful and tranquil, a great place to unwind and feel closer to nature.
Food was prepared at the restaurant, another gorgeous wooden platform with views across the valley. The meals were well prepared, simple but very tasty and with juices and coffees with each meal.
We hiked along various trails, and early in the morning we tried the bird watching tour with a student guide and even saw some congo monkeys! If there had been enough time we would also have tried the coffee tour of the estate with coffee tasting but sadly we only had 1 night there.
We loved that all funds from the hotel go to support the local school, and that students receive tourism lessons and gain work experience there - you really feel like you are contributing to the community and getting to interact with the students is really fun too.
A bit off the beaten track for some people perhaps, but as we had no vehicle they organised us a taxi from Jinotega for under $20. The room itself is slightly on the expensive side at $60 for the double, but the cabin was beautiful, this did include tax and as all of the money goes directly to a great cause we felt it was worth it. We did notice cheaper options such as deck-camping platforms with tents and dorm rooms for backpackers so you could do it on a budget too ($10-15 per night).
Well worth a trip out to see these beautiful mountains with their panoramic views, drink some excellent coffee and support a great cause!
