Description
El Jaguar Natural Reserve is located within a private farm, a property of the Duriaux Chavarría family. It is situated 188 kilometers away from the city of Managua and at 1, 350 meters above the sea level. Its fresh mountain climate, 290 bird species (migratory and local), a variety of flora and fauna and different trails for hiking, make this place suitable for research or a vacation time.
One of the main goals of the farm is to produce, in a sustainable way, high quality organic coffee in harmony with the environment and the community. In addition, it is extremely important for the owners to protect the 95 hectares of the reserve, which was declared an Important Bird Area (IBA) by the BirdLife International.
A great number of activities can be developed at El Jaguar. One of the most important ones is the birdwatching. As we mentioned above, the area is a transit zone of migratory birds, including 13 that can't be seen further down Nicaragua and seven globally threatened species. Also, walking trips of 4 to 6 hours length to San Rafael del Norte, Cascadas Verdes de la Unión, Apanás Lake and the new lake of the Hydroelectric dam Pantasma can be requested.
Furthermore, tourists that are interested in spending one or more nights in the reserve can perfectly stay at El Jaguar Hotel. The establishment has four cabins and one biological station tourists, groups of students and investigators. Also, trips to the Apanas Lake, pine forest, a canopy at San Rafael del Sur, among others, can be organized from this hotel.
