Description

San Juan del Sur is a great place to start a sailboat ride. Away from the town's bay you will find pristine beaches surrounded by tree covered hills that make this coast often inaccessible by road. Pelican Eyes offers such a trip in their 42’ sailing sloop.

You will meet at the wharf in San Juan del Sur at 9 in the morning. After departing you can enjoy the natural splendor of the Pacific Ocean from the deck. Beverages and snacks are provided, and soon after departing fishing lines are set out to catch lunch.

When the boat stops halfway at a secluded, untouched beach everybody goes out for a very fresh (seafood) lunch and a refreshing swim. This is a perfect way to see some of Nicaragua's finest beaches and undiscovered coastal areas. After this stop, the boat will slowly return to San Juan del Sur. The sun will sink into the ocean while you relax on the deck and enjoy the view. The whole trip takes about 8 hours.

In addition, there are some spectacular animals you can encounter during the trip. With some luck you can see whales and dolphins from the boat. It is not uncommon to see sea turtles near or on the shore. You can also spot frigate birds, pelicans, and other seabirds.

Day-trip prices are based on a minimum of 10 adult passengers. Prices are as follows: US$60 per adult, US$30 for children 11 years and under, and US$55 for additional passengers over the required minimum. An advance deposit of US$300.00 is required for groups desiring to reserve the entire boat for a trip.

Getting There

Getting to: San Juan del Sur Beach

If you are traveling in your own vehicle, you must take the road that leads to Rivas. After passing the city, you must continue until reaching the crossroad "La Virgen" (on the highway that takes you to the border with Costa Rica). From there, turn right and follow the 18 Kms that separates this point and San Juan del Sur.

If you are using public transportation, take a bus to the city of Rivas. Once you get to the municipal market, take another bus that will leave you in San Juan after about 45 minutes. In Managua you can find direct buses to San Juan del Sur in Roberto Huembes Market terminal.

During Holly Week, it is common to find people asking for financial aid at the entrance of the town when traveling in private transportation. This does not happen for buses.
