A very large, long-necked, mostly gray heron. Bill dull yellow to dusky; legs dark. Adult has black crown with white central stripe, in breeding dress also with two long black occipital plumes; neck grayish streaked in front with black and white; back and wings bluish gray; lower underparts streaked black and white with rufous thighs. Immature is similar but dingier, crown dusky without white.
