Slender black bill with yellow lores; legs black with bright yellow feet ('golden slippers'). Entirely white, with graceful filmy recurved aigrettes springing from crown, back, and chest during nesting season. Immature has greenish yellow back of leg, and gray at base of bill.
Habitat
Fairly common along both coasts; less numerous in freshwater marshes and along shores of lakes and rivers.
Habits and Behavior
An active feeder, walking, sometimes running in shallow water, stirring up prey with its feet and stabbing repeatedly to cath it.
