Description
Largest 'green' kingfisher. Somewhat crested. Dark oily green above with narrow white collar on hindneck and a few white spots on wings; white below, male with broad rufous chest and and a few green spots on flanks, female with broken band of green spot replacing male's rufous.
Habits and Behavior
Usually not found on coast but may occur in brakish lagoons or tidal rivers and river mouths. Favors wider watercourses, not shady streams (though present in small numbers in such situations as well). Has a loud harsh cack and a higher rapidly repeating note approaching a rattle.
