Description

Long slender blackish bill, hooked at tip; legs black. Adult entirely black; in breeding season bare facial skin dull yellow to orange, bordered behind by narrow line of white feathers. Immature more grayish brown above, paler below, almost white on breast. Juvenile almost entirely white below, including sides of head.

Habits and Behavior

Swims low in water, sometimes with no more than head and neck visible, bill tilting upwards. Has a strong steady flight (though some difficulty in becoming airborne) with outstretched head and neck slightly angled upward. Perches upright, often with wings outstretched to dry nonwaterproof plumage.
