Bill blackish. Male mostly brownish red, paler below and somewhat brighter on throat; crown scarlet bordered by narrow black line. Female olive brown above with tawny yellow crown bordered narrowly with black; yellowish olive below, the throat tawny yellowish.
Habits and Behavior
Tends to forage somewhat higher above ground than Red-throated and not to travel in as large groups. The usual call is a rapid chatter of staccatto notes, chit chit chit... , quite like Red-throat's harsh, tearing scolds.
