Description

The natural reserve La Pataste is located in the top of Cerro Tepesomoto, located in the northeast part of Pueblo Nuevo: a hill with excellent views and 1,700 meters above sea level, crowned with a thick forest and pristine nature.

In a part of the reserve there is a community project, set up with support of foreigners, to produce strawberries, mulberries, avocados, peaches, and other fruits.

The slope of the hill is inhabited by rural communities and big farms of diverse products, including organic coffee. One of these farms, ‘La Virgen’, rents horses, tours to get to know the area, and a laboratory where visitors can learn how to taste coffee.

On the way to the top, there is a zone that is covered by grass and few trees, with winds reaching 80 kilometers per hour. From here there is a nice view of the surrounding valleys. There is a point in the reserve, at a higher altitude, that provides a view of the Gulf of Fonseca at the Pacific coast, far away from this place.

Getting There

The natural reserve can be found 15 kilometers from Pueblo Nuevo (Pueblo Nuevo, 60 kilometers from Estelí). A 4WD vehicle is necessary because of the condition of the road and the inclination. The trail starts at La Virgen, which can be explored either by foot or by horse.
