Róger SolórzanoA great number of sectors related to the tourism of Ometepe Island, headed by the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism (INTUR), announced during a press conference the relaunch of the campaign "Mi vote for Ometepe", which aims to attract local and foreigner visitors to vote for the island in the second phase of the international contest "New Seven Wonders of the World".
Ometepe is currently situated at the fourth spot in the Island category. It must remain in the first seven places until July 7 in order to go to the next phase, so it can become a new natural wonder of the world. The contest is being developed by the New7Wonder organization with a collaboration from UNESCO.
During the conference, Mario Salinas, president of INTUR, pointed out that they started the first stage of the campaign back in June 2008, when the island was at the 104th place. The functionary stated that Ometepe's current position is encouraging and the voting process must be promoted massively with the support of the tourism field of Nicaragua, the local media and the dwellers.
"The image of Nicaragua will be extraordinary worldwide", said Salinas while detailing the benefits of situating the island as one of the new seven wonders of the world through this contest. As an interesting detail, the director of INTUR said that there is a local supporting campaign among the population of Bambridge Island, located in the United States.
Representatives of the municipal governments and the private tourism entrepreneurs of Ometepe expressed their support to the campaign, as well as other national companies. Indira Rojas, queen of the 2009 "Joy for Life" Carnival, will support the initiative by being the face of the campaign since she is from the department of Rivas.
