Hurricane Beta about to hit Nicaragua

On Saturday October 29th at 9AM (Nicaraguan time) Hurricane Beta has transformed into a Category 1 hurricane, meaning that its winds have reached 140 km per hour. This first signals of the hurricane are being observed in the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua, bordering with Honduras.

Beta is moving towards the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua and it will continue to strengthen during the next 24 hours. This hurricane is expected to reach Category 2 or 3 when it hits the mainland. At the time of writing, the storm has passed Corn Islands without any major damage. Bluefields and Greytown are not in the danger zone.

Commercial air lines have canceled their flights to the Caribbean Coast. Thousands of people from the northern communities of Nicaragua have been removed to refugees’ centers.
