Cinthia MembreñoThe 50th anniversary of the International Sports Fishing Tournament, annual event that gathers national and foreigner competitors wanting to catch the Atlantic Tarpon and other species, will be held in September, Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 in the department of Rio San Juan, specifically in the area between the Solentiname archipelago and El Castillo town. The competition, which also includes other parallel activities, will begin at 5:00 am on both days and will have the participation of competitors from Nicaragua, Costa Rica, England, Canada, Mexico, among others.
According to Reynaldo Galeano, member of the organizing committee, one of the achievements of the event is that the department of Rio San Juan becomes an internationally renowned destination each year. "The tournament also helps the local economy, since the competitors stay at hotels, eat at restaurants and buy products from inhabitants of the area," he stated.
According to the official release of the activity, given by the organizing committee, all the participants will compete - using only fishing rods with artificial baits and free ropes - to catch the following species: Tarpon, Seabass, Rainbow Bass and Machaca. Also, the tournament will have two catching options: catch and extraction/catch and release.
The awards event, which will be held on September 14 at 7:00 pm in the waterfront of the city of San Carlos, will honor the top three competitors who catch the biggest and heaviest species. Those will be determined by the weighing sites located in the waterfront of San Carlos, the municipal dock of El Castillo and the tourism dock of the San Fernando Island, situated in the Solentiname archipelago.
Reynaldo Galeano also informed that, during the days of the event, there will also be parallel activities in the city of San Carlos, such as a parade in occasion of the Nicaraguan Independence festivities, two beauty contests and one fishing competition for children. Furthermore, after the award event, there will be a small reception for competitors at El Granadino restaurant, at 8:00 pm.
The registration fee will be C$700 and can be made in any of the Budget Rent a Car offices (nationwide) or in the tourism information offices of the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism (INTUR), located in San Carlos' waterfront.
