Celebration of the Independence Day in Rio San Juan

Cinthia MembreñoA diverse program of activities related to culture, sports and beauty were held from Friday, September 10 to Wednesday 15 in the municipalities of El Castillo, Boca de Sábalos and San Carlos - located in the department of Rio San Juan - in honor of the Independence Day of Nicaragua.
For this occasion, the inhabitants of the area, as well as national and international tourists, were able to enjoy fishing tournaments, a beauty contest, parades by local students and music bands, a tourist rally, a cultural and gastronomic fair, among other activities that were organized for these holidays.
Sports activities
One of the main events was the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the International Sports Fishing Tournament. It was held on Monday, September 13 and Tuesday 14 and included the participation of 76 competitors from Nicaragua, Italy, Austria, Canada, Costa Rica, United States, France, Guatemala and England.
During the awards event of the tournament, which was held in the waterfront of the city of San Carlos, organizers highlighted the importance of promoting the "catch and release" category. The Nicaraguan Mario Hurtado was named the top winner of the competition after catching and releasing a Tarpon.
Another sports activity was the second tourist rally that took place in the Acoyapa-San Carlos highway. For this competition, which was held on Saturday, September 11, fourteen 4x4 SUVs and three motorbikes were registered. The winner of the first category was Humberto Huesa and Victor Zavala for the second one.
Cultural and beauty events
On Friday, September 10 a small tourism, cultural and gastronomic fair was inaugurated in San Carlos. A group of artisans from the San Fernando and Mancarron islands - which are famous for their primitive style and handicrafts made of light wood - exposed their products to national and foreigner visitors during for days.
In addition, students from different local schools from San Carlos and the municipality of El Castillo marched through the main streets of their towns, along with musical bands, on September 12 and 14 as part of the traditional parade in honor of the independence day.
Concerning the beauty pageant, the election of Miss Rio San Juan was held on Tuesday 14. This local contest featured the participation of candidates from the municipalities of San Miguelito, Morrito, El Castillo and San Carlos. Maria Jose Camacho was elected the queen of the Aquatic Carnival and Melsy Solórzano became Miss Rio San Juan 2010. The last one will represent the department during Miss Nicaragua 2011.
The festivities in honor of the independence days ended on Wednesday, September 15 when representatives from the Ministry of Education (MINED) read the Independence Act along with inhabitants of the area and local authorities. More information related to the independence on our special.
