Costumes, parades and dances will be part of the First Migratory Birds Festival of the isthmus of Rivas. The event, which is organized by Paso Pacifico - a nonprofit American organization - will be held on Saturday, October 9th, starting at 9:00 am, at the auditorium of the mayorship of San Juan del Sur.

According to a press release, given by Paso Pacifico, the activity will include an award ceremony for children that have been trained to become birdwatchers. There will be a simbolic exchange of rubber bands for binoculars. "Our educational program aims to eradicate this tool (rubber bands), used by children to hunt birds," said Liza González, national director of Paso Pacífico.

González also explained that the program has been developed to avoid the serious damages that hunting represents for migratory species. "...it creates a negative image about the way that Nicaraguans protect the fauna that inhabits the national territory," said Liza.

The activity will be celebrated as a homage to the World Migratory Bird Day, held annually every ninth of May. For this occasion, the Nicaraguan singer Mario Montenegro will give a concert with songs about childhood and the environment. Also, the local group Los Totos will participate.
