National Theater Festival in Managua

Social issues like corruption, intolerance, nature, women's freedom, alcoholism, among others, will be represented during the National Theater Festival, activity that will be held from Saturday, November 13th to November 20th at the Ruben Dario National Theater. During eight days, always a 7:30 pm, five national groups and three international ones coming from Spain, Honduras and Costa Rica will perform with their plays at the Pilar Aguirre Experimental Salon.

Salvador Espinoza, president of the Network of Theater Professionals (organizer of the event), explained that the goal of the festival is to give an impulse to the theatrical production. "We want to give more professional theater plays to the audience," he said. Furthermore, he stated that the parallel activities included in the event will be focused on promoting the participation of young people in the theater world.

This year, the national groups that will participate are:

= Comedia Nacional de Nicaragua with the theater play “El día que me quieras”

= Grupo Quetzalcóatl (Matagalpa) with “La Resma de Papel”

= Grupo Capullo (León) with “Juan Ceniza”

= Teatro Justo Rufino Garay with “La Revuelta”

= Teatro Dante with the play “El Escarabajo”.

On the other hand, the international groups will be:

= Rafael Álvarez (España) with the theater play “El Brujo”

= Teatro Bambú (Honduras) and “Mea Culpa”

= Vicky Montero (Costa Rica) and the play “Penélope Bloom”

Concerning the parallel activities, there will be two in the city of Managua, which will be for free but have a limited space. The first will be the National Encounter of Theater Artists. It will include a conference named "The theatrical training, the vision of young people" and will be held on Tuesday, November 16th, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, at the Salón Azul of the National Palace of Culture. According to Salvador Espinoza, this meeting will have the participation of members from formal and informal theater schools of Nicaragua. "We want to insist on the fact that the theatrical training must start with young people. We want them to tell us about their methodologies, needs and expectations," he declared.

The second activity will be a Theater Directing Workshop for Young Directors, which will be given by Gonzalo Cuellar Leaño - director and founder of the Guachipilin Muppet Theater - in Universidad del Valle. The course will start on Monday, November 15th and will end on November 18th. Some of the requirements are having a minimum experience of directing at least two plays, being between 18 and 25 years old and having the enough free time to attend the four days of the workshop. Also, a motivational letter must be sent to información@guachipilin.org and a resume detailing the experience in theater. Space is limited to 10 people.
