A national and Latin American surf championship will take place at our country this month.

Aposentillo Beach, located in El Viejo, Chinandega, will be for the first time the sports arena where professional competitors from 15 countries in Latin America will gather, who will participate in the third Latin American Surf Championship Nicaragua 2012, which is part of the international circuit of Latin Tour from the Latin American Surfing Association (ALAS), and will take place next November 23,24 and 25.

The championship is organized in Nicaragua by business woman Lucy Valenti, the Nicaraguan Association of Surfing and the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism (INTUR). The first two Latin Pro were held in Rivas: the first in 2010 in Playa Santana, municipality of Tola, the second in Playa Maderas, in San Juan del Sur. In this third time the beach chosen was Playa Aposentillo in Chinandega, for the excellent waves and the existence of several hotels in the area, Valenti said.

The announcement was made at a press conference in Managua, on Thursday November 10th. Organizers said they hope around 80 and 110 surfers from different countries will attend the event. Registration is now open, and must be made through the official website of ALAS. There will be four categories in competition: longboard, ladies, junior and open.

First dates of the national championship

The Nicaraguan delegation to participate in the Latin Pro could have between 15 and 20 surfers. Many, if not all, could be the finalists and winners of the first date of the 2012 National Surfing Championships, which will be taking place the weekend, on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th. The Nicaraguan Federation of Surf will sponsor the leading surfers to participate in the Latin American Championship by the end of the month.

Ivan Saballos, federation president, said that during this first dates of the chapionship taking place in Playa Maderas, San Juan del Sur, around 100 to 200 surfers from the West of Nicaragua, Tola and San Juan del Sur will be participating. The categories will be open, junior, master, ladies, longboard and bodyboard.

Ivan recalled that last year the host delegation managed to get first place in the Junior category in the Latin Pro, highlighted by the Nicaraguan surfer Rex Calderón.
