Description
The Ecotourism Project Palo de Oro operates in Juan Venado Island Wildlife Refuge, in front of the beach Las Peñitas. It offers lodging and tours on the island, with the objective of maintaining the environmental conservation outline and promote the community participation and development.
In the project area there are 4 rustic cabins made of palm and wood, installed just in front of the sea. They can accommodate up to 25 people, and are located in the Palo de Oro area of Juan Venado Island. Despite being in a rural area, the shared bathrooms are well equipped. There is also a big ranch where is located the restaurant and bar area. There you can buy breakfast (C$90), lunch (C$160) or dinner (C$90).
Guests have full access to the ranches, chairs, tables and hammocks to relax, and free access to the wide beach where is possible to surf or take a swim on the Pacific warm waters. There are also some hiking areas where to walk and appreciate the animals and vegetation on this area. There are over 163 species of migratory or resident birds on the island, as well as reptiles, raccoons, iguanas, lizards and other species. If you visit the project in August, September and October you could take a night walk with the Palo de Oro's people and could have the opportunity to find a mother sea turtle nesting in that beach. And, from October to February you will see the babies turtles birth in the project's permanent nursery.
Note: Payment for accommodation includes transfer hostel-island-hostel and the visitor center at Playa Las Penitas. This payment does not include entry fee to Juan Venado Island Wildlife Refuge (check here below the price).
In addition to the services there are boat tours available around the Island, birdwatching tours, night tours, turtle nestling and tour to Corcovado (the core area of the reserve). The project also includes other initiatives such as the nursery, conservation and release of green iguanas.
To get to the establishment you have to go to the Visitors Center located in Playa Las Peñitas, where the project staff will transfer by boat to the lodge.
