  • Casa de la Peñas Tour in Isla Juan Venado

    The meeting point is at the Visitor Center in Las Peñitas. Here it will be given an explanation with a map about what you will do during the tour among the mangroves in a medium boat with a captain and a local guide.

    The adventure start after taking the boat. You will appreciate several several migratory and local birds, as pelican, frigate, grey heron, among others

    After 20 minutes on the boat you will note that the river become most narrow, allowing us to see every natural details closer. We will see the green iguana on the mangrove trees, and if we are lucky we could see a raccoon sleeping between branches.

    We will reach the return point, in an area knows as Casa de Peña 1 hour and a half after the starting moment. Then, we will come to a rustic pier, where we will stop and walk to visit the Palo de Oro instalation inside the reserve and in front of the beach. You should profit to take a swim, or a juice or a cold beer.

    After this visit we will walk to the boat, and return to the Visitos Center in Las Peñitas beach, where the tour will finish.

  • Night tour of turtle nesting in Juan Venado Island

    Our invitation for you is to schedule this tour between July and October. During these months is the nesting season for sea turtle, and there is a big presence of mother turtle (particularly Olive Ridley or paslama) coming to the beach to lay their eggs.

    Our meeting point is the Visitor Center in Las Peñitas community. There we will take a boat and come to the reserve, where we will walk to the Palo de Oro project center located in the beach, right in front of the ocean. The project include a nursery for sea turtle protection, conservation and reproduction.

    After a small talk by our guide about the conservation work in the center, we will start a 5 kilometers walk on the reserve beach, and we will appreciate those beautiful reptiles in danger of extinction.

    If we are lucky, we will not just observe the mother turtle nesting, but we will participate in the task of relocating the eggs from the nest to the nursery, where they will be protected until the babies turtle birth.

    Taking this tour at the end of October will let you observe new born baby turtles, and also have the experience of releasing them on the beach, after the sunset.

    This tour has 3.5 hours of lenght. We will return to the Visitor Center in Las Peñitas, where it will be finished.

  • Corcovado Tour in Juan Venado Island

    The adventure start on the boat from Las Peñitas. We will get 14 kilometers inside the reserve. During this tour we will watch a lot of migratory and local birds among the mangrove forest.

    The river will get norrow as we advance inside the reserve, which will allow us to better appreciate the fauna and flora. After 8 kilometers of tour, we will star seeing small crocodile, taking sunbath on the banks or hunting a few meters away from us. Birds quantity and crocodile size (1 or 2 meters) will increase as we advance (crocodiles are completely inoffensive to us).

    We will stop a while under the forest shadow, and will enjoy tropical fruits brought by our local guide.
    After exploring the core zone of the protected area, we will start the returning travel. We will stop in a rustic pier and walk to visit the Palo de Oro project installation inside the reserve. There you could ask and take luch (delicious and fresh fried fish with a natural juice, not included on the tour fee); and, if your lunch take a while to come to your table, you can take a beer in front of the beach.

    We will take again the boat after visiting Palo de Oro, and will return to Las Peñitas, where the tour will end.

  • Kayaking Tour among Juan Venado Island mangroves

    We start this adventure from Las Peñitas community, where we will meet and you will take the kayaks (for one or two people) and the life jackets. The meeting point will be the same from where the tour will start and will finish the tour: from Hotel Barca de Oro 300 meters West, next to the Visitors Center.

    From there you will kayaking into the beautiful river (channel) which separate mainland and the Juan Venado Island. After the first 100 meters you will kayaking among the mangrove forest, and will have the privilege of seeing several types of local and migratory birds, crabs, local people in their daily activities. You will paddle for around 4 kilometers and then get to a pier, from where we will walk and visit a community project in front of the beach, where you can buy and enjoy a cold beer, or a swimming in the Pacific Ocean.   • Releasing baby turtles tour in Juan Venado Island

    This adventure start in Las Peñitas community. We will wait for you in the Visitor Center, or we will meet you in any meeting point within Las Peñitas (please, indicate that in the comment box during your online booking process). From the Visitors Center, we will take a boat and travel to the reserve. For around 20 minutes we will watch several species of bird, including grey heron and tricolored heron.

    After a boat travel of 30 minutes, we will land in a rustic pier in Juan Venado reserve. We will come to the Palo de Oro Project center, where a sea turtle nursery is set. In the center, our guide will explain the conservation work performed there, and will talk about the sea turtles nesting in the reserve.

    Sunset will indicate the releasing moment. You will help us by taking baby turtles in your hands, and releasing them in the beach sand. You will sea these cute and fragile reptiles in a desperate run to the waves. When the last baby turtles has gone into the ocean, we will walk back to the boat, and then come back to the visitor center, where the tour will be finished.

  • Aquatic tour between mangroves

    We take a boat from Las Peñitas community and get into mangrove ecosystem through a estuary (see arm). We will slow progress into the reserve so we could appreciate the must fauna as possible. After 6 or 7 kilometers (4 miles) we will return for the same way. Arriving to a small quay, we will walk 200 meters (0.12 mille) on the island on the sea direction, and will visit a community project with palm ranch, bathroom and shower in front of an excellent beach to swim. If we came in sea turtle hatching season we will see some little turtle babies. After 30 minutes in th project, we will take again the boat and go back to Las Peñitas, were tour is ended.

  • Release of baby sea turtles tour

    We take a boat from Las Peñitas Community and travel 2 kilometers (1.24 millas) through the stuary between the island and mainland. Then we walk 200 meters into the reserve (island) to the beach, where a Sea Turtle Nursery is located and managed by a local project. There, you will know about the project work on the conservation of sea turtles, and some general information about these beatiful animals.

    If there is a lot of baby turtle, each visitors will take a baby and will carry him to the sandy beach, 5 meters from the water, where you will let him start his free live by reaching the sea. Then we will return to the boat, and travel to Las Peñitas where tours is ended.

  • Rustic boat tour by Juan Venado Island Reserve

    Our meeting point to start this tour will be the Isla Juan Venado Visitors Center, located in Las Peñitas community, near the last bus stop. There we will take a small rustic boat and go inside the reserve. We will go slowly and in silence, so we can observe the wild flora and fauna.

    The scenario will be a large mangrove forest, crab on the trees’ root, iguanas between the branches and, suddenly, a heron flying near us. It is possible to appreciate during this tour grey heron, blue heron, among other birds in aquatic eco-systems. If the tour is held in low tide, and if we are lucky, we could see small crocodile hunting its food among the mangrove, or taking a sunbath in the sand.

    We will go for 10 kilometers inside the reserve, and then we will return. While returning, we will stop in a small pier, and from there we will walk for around 300 meters to a sea turtle conservation program installation. There we will visit a nursery, and will talk about the conservation effort for that endangered species.

    If we come during the hatching season, you will observe several few hours old baby turtles. If the tour is on the afternoon, you will the privilege of taking some baby turtle and let them in the sand, to finally see them going desperately to the Pacific Ocean waters.

    After that adventure, we will return to the boat and then to the community, where the tour will end.
