León - Momotombo Volcano - Hike

Description

At 1297 meters (4255ft) above sea level and forming one of Nicaragua's most familiar landmarks, it's hard to miss this majestic volcano located on the north side of Lake Managua. Both its altitude and perfect volcanic cone make Momotombo Nicaragua's most impressive volcano. The volcano is almost perfectly symmetrical, and its form is a symbol of Nicaragua, cropping up in locations from matchboxes to revolutionary murals.

With its last eruption dating back to 1905, Momotombo is still considered active. In fact, an eruption in 1610 forced the inhabitants of the Spanish city of León to relocate about 30 miles west; the ruins of this city are preserved at León Viejo (Old León).

As the temperatures of certain parts of the volcano continually exceed 500°C a geothermal plant has been created at the base of the volcano, producing about 10% of the country's electrical power.

We will pick you up at your hotel in León in the early morning with a 4x4 vehicle and drive you up to 450 meters below the summit, before continuing on by foot. Climbing the Momotombo is a challenging task. Due to the fact that this it is a classic cone-shaped volcano, the trails and paths that lead up to the summit are oftentimes very steep. Volcanic sand and rocks coat most of the upper portion of the volcano so good physical shape is necessary to navigate these difficult surfaces.

This all being said, all these hardships that may be faced climbing Momotombo yield some very substantial rewards. Views are magnificent from the volcano, as you have a great view of the crater itself (150 x 250m (492x820 ft), the neighboring volcanoes, the Pacific Ocean, the city of León, and on a clear day you can even see as far as the Masaya Volcano and Ometepe Island. The Momotombo is not a volcano suitable for everybody, but if you are up to it, the Momotombo offers a great challenge and an unparalleled climb that is definitely worth the effort.

You can also ascend and descend the entire volcano on foot, which adds about three to four hours to the trip.

Duration: 5-6 hrs hiking, 3-4 more if you decide to ascend and descend the entire volcano by foot.
