Description

People visiting Zapatera Island have the change to practice artisanal fishing at the shores of the Sonzapote area and at the bay with the same name. Groups can be taken in a small boat and equipped with a simple net the participants will be instructed how to throw the net. The fishermen are inhabitants of the local community, and they are experts on this type of fishing because that is how they normally make their living.

Generally the fishing is good at this place, and even novice fishermen will be able to capture mojarras and sometimes even guapote. Visitors can furthermore enjoy the calm water at this side of the island and the natural surroundings. This activity takes around three hours (or less, depending on what the tourists prefer) and the price is US$4 per person.

Other activities can also be organized around the Sonzapote community, including walking the Trail of the Petroglyphs or climbing the Las Banderas or the Zapatera Hill.

How to get to Zapatera Island

The easiest way to get the Zapatera Island is by taking a boat from the Asese port in Granada. However, there is no public transportation to the island so the only way to organize this is to rent a private boat. Another way to get there is by contacting the Sonzapote Community (see Recommended Contacts to the left).
