European Union celebrate May in Nicaragua

A film festival, a business fair and a international opera are the main activities.

May will be a month of celebration for European Union Office (UE) and all European country embassies in Nicaragua and allies. For this special month they have put together a number of activities open to the general public initiating the first days of the month until the last days. The goal: establish further interaction with Nicaraguan public and share the many activities accomplished by their region in matters of cooperation and commercial exchange with this nation.

The most remarkable activities engross fields such as culture, industry and commerce. A short summary of key events will be provided along this note. The central festivity to celebrate is Europe’s Day, officially 9 May, which commemorates The Shuman declaration (which led to integration and peace on the region) signed over 63 year ago. “With these series of events we are trying to emphasize the work implemented around the world by the European Union, especially in Nicaragua and the region, said Javier Sandomingo, head of the European Union in Central America.

The number of activities revolve around three main events:

European Film Festival:29 films of diverse genre and 11 European nationalities will represent a sample of the festival’s 10th Edition, which has been celebrated since year 2000. The pictures will be shown in 2 series. The first one started since past May 2nd and will finalize on Wednesday 16th in Cinemas Santo Domingo Movie Theater. The screenings will have a representative fee of C$50. The second series will be displaying from May 16 to May 31 for free at 15 universities and 4 cultural centers in Nicaragua.

The Euro-fair: will be held Friday 10th and Saturday 11th at Crowne’s Plaza Convention Center (Managua) from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm on both days. Organized by the Nicaraguan-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CICNA), along with Spain, Italy, Denmark, Great Britain and France Chambers. This is the fair’s 5th edition and it seeks, according to its organizers, to promote commerce exchange and to offer information for small Nicaraguan business about trade opportunities in Europe and at the same time to take advantage of the Association Agreement signed over last year between EU and Central America.

Representing tourism at the fair is a stand in charge of “Nicaragua Viajando Sostenible” (Nicaragua Sustainable Traveling) which will exhibit safe tourism practices and a list of offering businesses and attractions that are working with a sustainable concept; there will also be available for sale Nicaragua Tour Map – Sustainable Traveling for a special price. Assisting to the fair will be the Network of Private Wildlife Reserves, Ometepe’s Green Farms, Solentiname Tours operator and hotels like Selva Negra, La Gran Francia, Darío, Mancarrón-Solentiname and Las Mercedes.

Opera “Carmen”: a monumental staging that includes participation by – choir, orchestra and soloists – a team of 80 artists form Germany, Italy, France, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panama. The play was shown to the public on Tuesday at Teatro Nacional Rubén Darío, and a second private performance on May 9th. Set by the National Theater and Camerata Bach, the opera production also shown costume and scenography brought by the performers to help illustrate the drama, romance and tragedy.
