Description
Welcome to San Juan de la Isla
Experience the most unique lake island in the world from an unrivaled vantage-point: San Juan de la Isla - Nicaragua’s most comfortable and authentic island lodge - located lake-front on Santo Domingo Beach.
San Juan de la Isla enjoys stunning vistas of Isla Ometepe’s towering volcanoes, the rugged, active Volcán Concepción and the misty, cloud forest wrapped Volcán Maderas. The volcano lodge’s beach-front location is the ideal base for swimming in Lake Nicaragua’s clean, warm waters, hiking inside nature reserves, mountain biking, horseback riding and volcano climbing.
Perhaps best of all is the laid-back, authentic campesino ambience of San Juan de la Isla, which is set inside the Finca San Juan, a tropical fruit tree plantation surrounded by precious wood trees and rare wildlife. The understated, century-old Spanish colonial hacienda house has been faithfully restored and serves visitors as the lodge’s restaurant. Lodging is exclusive, limited to four colonial rooms, a new construction building of four rooms and porch, two independent bungalows and three log cabins set along the beach under swaying coconut palms.
The Lodge
Comfort, privacy, great lake and volcano views, authentic Nicaraguan hacienda style, a long sandy beach and warm water all invite the visitor to make San Juan de la Isla the first choice for a beach front lodge on Ometepe Island. With more than 160 acres of lush green fields, forest, streams and fruit trees, the lodge grounds reflect the tranquility of Latin America’s second grandest lake. Void of pretension or kitsch so frequent in Central American island lodging, the San Juan de la Isla Lodge is an ideal base for visitors who wish to feel at one with the island nature and culture.
Relaxing in a hammock and watching the gentle trade wind waves of the great Lake Nicaragua might be the great test sport of all, but there is much more.
Swimming to a nearby rock island in front of the lodge, walking or horseback riding on the long sandy beach, kayaking or mountain biking and volcano climbing and nature hiking to name just a few. Ometepe’s magnificent human history, dating to more than a millennium before the birth of Christ, its mysterious rock art, monumental indigenous sculptures and unique ceramics give visitors of San Juan de la Isla many options beyond adventure and nature. The culture of Ometepe is a step into the past with ox carts working in the fields and children riding to school mounted on bulls.
The call of the howler monkey often reverberates through this historic hacienda, as troops of monkeys take advantage of the properties numerous fruit trees. Numerous beautiful birds, resident and migrant also populate the grounds and visit the thousands of century old Spanish Cedar trees, while the lake waters that lap the lodge’s beach are home to more than 45 species of fresh water fish.
The village of Altagracia with its historic statues and quaint village church are a short bike ride or walk from the lodge and San Juan de la Isla offers guided hikes and climbs of both volcanoes. We invite you to visit our little slice of heaven and experience the stunning vistas and rich culture of Ometepe Island.
